City lawyers now thrash journalists

LAHORE-Instead of repenting over torturing a cop, a group of lawyers again went on rampage on Thursday as they violently thrashed journalists to 'punish them for reporting and making TV footage of the incident, causing serious injuries to a cameraman. In this episode of lawyers violence, a reporter and a cameraman of a private news channel were made hostage and thrashed by the lawyers in Sessions Court allegedly for making footage of lawyers while beating an ASI of Nishtar Colony police station two days ago. The deplorable incident sparked countrywide protest of journalists community as they termed it an aggressive move against freedom of Press. The same group of lawyers also manhandled an Additional District & Sessions Judge when he refused to cancel the FIR registered against them on the complaint of the victim cop. The judge was of the view how he could order to cancel the FIR as it was a legal requirement to issue notice to the respondents (State) on first date of hearing. But the adamant lawyers insisted that the judge should issue cancellation orders and got infuriated when their demand was not fulfilled by the judge Malik Muhammad Rafi. The violent lawyers got physical with the judge, tore the case files and started chanting slogans against the judge besides giving him threats of dire consequences. Meanwhile, the lawyers got hold of the reporter Shaheen Attique and cameraman Nasir Hussain who had the opportunity to cover live the lawyers torture on the cop on Wednesday. In a bid to take revenge from the journalists, the lawyers attacked them and gave a good thrashing to them. The cameraman fell unconscious due to the brutal torture of violent lawyers. The lawyers were led by Awan, Vice President Lahore Bar Association. The lawyers not only misbehaved with them but stopped them from making any footage. About 20 lawyers of the Lahore Bar Association (LBA) attacked crew of a local TV channel and severely injured one of them for airing footage of lawyers torture on a policeman. They started beating reporter Shaheen Attique and cameraman Nasir Hussain and snatched his camera. They threw cameramen on the floor, kicked him while one lawyer hit his head with an iron rod and the blood started gushing out. They also thrashed court reporter Shaheen Attique. Some other lawyers who had attacked the journalists were later identified as Sajjad Afzal, Mehar Jahangir, Malik Muhammad Hanif and Rana Asif. After the incident, the journalists protested on The Mall against highhandedness of the lawyers and demanded action against them. A delegation of journalists also met LHC Chief Justice Khawaja Muhammad Sharif demanding him to take suo motu action against the incident but he told them that he had issued directions to the lawyers bodies to hold inquiry into the incident. However the journalists denied accepting the constitution of the inquiry committee saying as only lawyers were included in the committee. They demanded that some journalists should also be included in the committee. Senior Superintendent of Police Chaudhry Shafique said that nobody was above the law and those who had committed illegality would be brought to book. He said once the victim journalists approached the police, it would take action according to the law. He said none of the accused found involved in the incident, would be spared. Attique told his media friends that after completing their routine work in the Sessions Court, they were about to leave the court premises when a group of about 20 lawyers approached them and started pulling them from their collars forcing them to go to the bar room. Meanwhile, Court Reporters Association of Lahore has announced to observe a complete boycott of all the bar associations and bar councils in protest against the lawyers torture on media personnel of a local news channel in Sessions Court. The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the Association held on Thursday in Lahore High Court. The Association strongly condemned the incident and termed it an attack on freedom of Press. The meeting decided that the functions or any other activity of lawyers would not be covered by media till the responsible lawyers were not taken to the task. President Punjab Union of Journalist Ahsan Zia also condemned the lawyers for torturing the journalists who were performing their professional duty honestly and impartially. The governing body of Lahore Press Club (LPC) also condemned the incident and demanded the Chief Justice Lahore High Court and Punjab Bar Council to take strict action against the responsible(s). President LPC Sarmad Bashir appealed to the Chief Justice of Pakistan and Chief Justice Lahore High Court to take suo moto notice on the regretful incident. Chairman Judicial Activism Panel (JAP) Muhammad Azhar Siddique strongly condemned the lawyers for torturing the journalists. He said the lawyers responsible for the incident not only damaged the image of their own community but also sent a bad image to international community. He appealed to the Chief Justice LHC to take suo moto notice against the incident and bring the guilty lawyers to book. The meeting was attended by Saeed Chaudhry, Saqlain Javed, Shoaib Ali, Hamid Nawaz, Shadab Riaz, Nawaz Tahir, Hassnain-ur-Rehman Qureshi, Amir Riaz, Shakeel Saeed and F.H Shahzad.
