Jackboot on waterpipe

The residents of Indus Road II, III of Lalkurti have been suffering due to disruption of water supply for the past whole month for reasons best known to the army officials responsible for water supply to the area. One of the reasons given is the ongoing development work near the GHQ. The lives of these people have been greatly disturbed because they have to travel great distances many times a day simply to get water for drinking and cooking, let alone washing and bathing. Here again is an example of the 'privileged' members of the society walking all over the basic rights of the common man, paying no heed to the suffering caused. Repeated requests for restoration of the water supply have fallen on deaf ears. Will we too have to take to the streets like the people of Lahore for our voices to be heard? -AHMED SALEEM, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, July 24.
