LAHORE: National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq says the protest sit-ins cannot topple down the government.

“The time has passed when ‘dharnas’ were effective to overthrow a government,” the speaker said with reference to the PTI protest warnings yesterday.

The PML-N leader told the media that there was neither any threat to democracy nor he was seeing any conspiracy being hatched to throw down the government. The elements mulling protest against the government would be frustrated as the era of throwing down a government through protest has gone, he added. “The PTI dharna protest will meet the same fate it had in the past,” Sadiq said while warning the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf to not repeat the mistake of tendering resignations from the Parliament. “PTI is a democratic party and Parliament is the best forum for it to get the problems addressed instead of going to the streets.”–Staff Reporter

To a question on the Terms of Reference for Panama Papers probe, he said that the government desired another meeting of the parliamentary committee to work out the ToRs. In this regard, Sadiq said that he had also talked to PPP Senator Barrister Aitzaz Ahsan and Sherry Rahman.

“The ToRs issue will be resolved on the table through talks and not the street protest. My job is to just make the parties sit together and hold talks,” he added.
