Moving violations of senses

Driving along the roads, one notices an increasing number of garbage trucks doing the rounds these days to clean up the city. That is an improvement as they are a significant component of the mechanism for a healthy society. The problem, though, is that these trucks themselves are also a source of nuisance and, shall we say, uncleanness. Not only do they leave behind them a trail of strong stench but their open rear sides also cause the garbage fragments to fly away everywhere onto cars, passengers or passerby's faces which can be very irksome and infuriating. Great care should be taken to ensure these trucks are completely covered from the back by a plastic or polythene sheet or a piece of cloth which can be removed for putting garbage inside the truck and is always put back in place once the vehicle starts moving. Secondly, proper rules should be chalked out to make this system better, as for instance; the trucks should only commute during the early hours of daytime or just after dawn when the roads are comparatively deserted. -UROOBA ALAM, Karachi, via e-mail, March 26.
