ISLAMABAD The Pakistan Football Federation (PFF) has invited 16 teams to show their mettle in the 20th National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) National Football Challenge Cup (NFCC), which will be played at Qasim Bagh Stadium Multan. Khan Research Laboratories (KRL) will defend the title who last year had broken the jinx of not winning title in domestic soccer since their maiden appearance in 1995 when they imposed 1-0 win over PIA in the final at HESCO Complex, Hyderabad. Multan will host the matches of national event after the lapse of 35 years. The same venue hosted the 23rd National Championship in 1975, with PIA beating Punjab A 3-1 in the final. Multan also hosted the 9th and 20th edition of National Championship in 1958 and 1971 respectively. It is 20th event for departmental teams and fourth under title of National Football Challenge Cup. The event, scheduled to run from April 16-29 at the City of Sufis, has been recharged after 2005 on instructions of Pakistan Football Federation (PFF)s President Makhdoom Syed Faisal Saleh Hayat. The event will dig out upcoming, talented players for us in the build up for the National team to take part in coming international assignments, said Faisal who was chief guest when PTCL won the 2005 edition at Army Sports Complex, Rawalpindi under floodlights. With most successful team of event Allied Bank Limited (four wins) and 2005 Champion Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) no more in soccer activity, national champions and holders KRL, WAPDA, Army, NBP, KPT, PIA, Navy, KESC, HBL, PEL, PTV, PAF, Sindh Government Press (SGP), SSGC, HEC and DFA Multan. The three stand bye teams are Pak Steel, Pakistan Police and PPWD.
