LAHORE - Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif has ordered immediate suspension of Lahore General Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr Iqbal Kazmi for unnecessary delay in the installation of a diagnostic machine worth millions of rupees, unhygienic condition at the hospital and failure to address the complaints of indoor patients. The CM has also sought a report from the Secretary Health regarding establishment of another neuro hospital keeping in view the large number of neuro patients in the province. According to a handout, the CM issued these orders during his surprise visit to the said hospital here on Tuesday. Shahbaz Sharif visited emergency ward, orthopaedic, neuro-surgery and general wards and enquired from every patient about the availability of medical facilities. He personally inspected cleanliness conditions in different wash rooms. He said that those officers deserved no mercy who neglected timely arrangements for installation of the imported machinery. He said it was a pity that on the one hand thousands of patients were deprived of treatment due to non-availability of modern medical and diagnostic facilities while on the other hand, gadgets worth crores of rupees were left non-operational in the hospitals. He said that a modern CT scanner worth crores of rupees had been received in the hospital in October 2009, but criminal negligence was displayed in its installation. He said that merely a sense of responsibility was needed for installation of scanner and no additional expenditure had to be incurred. He called for the Chief Executive and Medical Superintendent of Lahore General Hospital and inquired about the reasons for delay in installation of diagnostic gadget. Secretary Health Punjab Fawad Hassan Fawad informed the CM that after taking notice by him, the CT scan had been installed within five days and now it was operational. He directed the Secretary Health to improve the conditions at the hospital within 24 hours. Another handout adds: The visit of the Chief Minister to Lahore General Hospital was kept secret till the last moment. Even the Health and Infornation secretaries who were accompanying the CM were unaware of the visit. Traffic flow was also as usual on roads. The patients at the hospital had a pleasant surprise to see the Chief Minister among them. A number of elderly women told the Chief Minister about the treatment facilities being provided at the hospital and prayed for his long life for the provision of free medicines. The attendants of the patients raised slogans in favour of Shahbaz Sharif.
