LAHORE – The Punjab government has released an amount of Rs 600 million for establishing 100 model police stations across the province, in addition to that 10 thousand fresh policemen will annually be recruited in the police force.

This was stated by the Inspector General of Police Punjab while addressing the Police Darbar and the media representatives at Police Line, Bahawalpur, on Friday. RPO Bahawalpur, and all police officers/officials of the region were present on this occasion.

The IGP further said special campaign would be started from next month to arrest top twenty proclaimed offenders from every district and for this purpose lists had already been finalised.

Muhammad Habibur Rehman said the police department was being reorganised on modern scale and we hope to combine investigation with the operation. He said at district level DPO, and SHO at police station level would look after the operations and investigations simultaneously. The IGP said promotion board of DSPs to SP level would be held tomorrow and later on the promotion of Inspectors to DSP will be finalised.

The IGP stressed upon the senior police officers to hold open courts regularly in remote areas so that the grievances of the people could be redressed at their hometowns.

Earlier the IGP announced an Umrah ticket for Hafiz Farrukh Ijaz for presenting impressive recitation of Naat at Police Darbar.

ASJ, storekeeper suspended: Inspector General Prisons Mian Farooq Nazir on Friday suspended an Assistant Superintendent Jail and storekeeper of Muzaffargarh jail for their alleged involvement in providing substandard food to inmates.

The IG also issued show cause notices to the Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent of jail on the issue. A senior officer said that IG Prisons paid a surprise visit to Muzaffargarh jail and found the storekeeper involved in supplying substandard meat to the prisoners.

On which Mian Farooq suspended in-charge kitchen of the jail Assistant Superintendent and storekeeper. The IG found that contractor was supplying meat with bone in connivance with jail officers while as per agreement contractor was bound to supply boneless meat to the jail inmates.

It is worth mentioning here that after taking charge of his office, the IG prisons on the direction of Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif was actively paying surprise visits to various jails of the province to check illegal use of mobile phones and supply of substandard food. The IG Prisons when contacted said that he has already warned head of all jails of the province to be vigilant and ensure ban on use of illegal cell phones inside jails and provision of quality food.

A couple of weeks back the Home Department on the reports of prisons officers had suspended the entire staff of the Jhelum Jail who failed to control the use of cell phones by the inmates.

The suspended staffers included the Jail Superintendent, Deputy Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, Chief Warders, Head Warders and Warders.

It was also revealed that some inmates had threatened the complainants not to pursue the cases against them. An inspection team paid a surprise visit to Jhelum Jail on the directions of the Inspector General of Prisons and recovered 31 mobile phones from the inmates. The inspection squad then sent a report to the Home Department for further action. Sources claim that Prisons Department has formed an inspection squad comprising 100 officials headed by DIG prisons, principal and vice principals of staff training institute of jails. The squad was imparted search and security training at the institute especially for the purpose.

The IG himself was also paying visits to the jails for this purpose and to ensure quality of food the Prisons Department has asked contractors to supply live chickens to jails across Punjab and slay them in the presence of jail superintendents. Meat of already slaughtered chicken would not be used inside any prison.
