Meeting on blood transfusion safety

LAHORE - World Health Organisation (WHO) EMRO mission held a meeting with the Punjab Healthcare Commission to learn about the implementation of safe blood transfusion services through enforcement of the Minimum Service Delivery Standards and other legislator provisions.

The WHO delegation, comprised Regional Advisor WHO EMRO Dr Franciscus Adrianus Konings, Medical Officer Blood and Transfusion Safety WHO EMRO Dr Yetmgeta E Abdella, and was accompanied by the Technical Expert Safe Blood Transfusion Program of Pakistan Usman Waheed and Secretary Punjab Blood Transfusion Authority (PBTA) Dr Muhammad Athar. Chief Operating Officer PHC Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan led the Commission’s team including Director Clinical Governance and Organisational Standards Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Salariya and Additional Director (Quality Assurance) Dr Qamar Salman.

Dr Muhammad Ajmal Khan talked about problems and issues being faced for the safe blood transfusion services in both the public and private healthcare establishments (HCEs), and told that the Commission had offered every kind of support to the PBTA. He mentioned that the PHC had collected data of all types of HCEs through census and developed their MSDS, including Standards for the safe blood transfusion in the hospitals where surgeries were taking place. “The laws and rules are in place, but their translation into action is an issue,” he said.

While thanking the PHC for cooperation, Dr Ather said the PBTA would not be able to gain required results without support of the PHC, especially where the transfusions were taking place since the MSDS were also regularising the blood transfusion.  Dr Mushtaq told the meeting that the PHC had incorporated statutory requirements of the safe blood transfusion, and disposal of the waste. He said the HCEs offering surgical services must have adequate testing and storage arraignments as well.

 PML-N to clean sweep election, says minister

 LAHORE (APP): Punjab Minister for Human Rights and Minorities Affairs Khalil Tahir Sindhu Friday said that Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) will clean sweep the upcoming general elections this year. “We will clean sweep the elections with the public support and on the basis of the PML-N excellent performance during the current tenure,” he added.

Speaking to a select group of media-persons at his GOR residence, he said the PML-N was united under the leadership of Nawaz Sharif and Shehbaz Sharif. He said that various surveys conducted by neutral agencies, showed that the PML-N was most popular among the people.

He said that those conspiring to exclude Nawaz Sharif from mainstream politics had met their logical end. “Masses had already buried the politics of hypocrisy and lies,” he said.

Replying to a question, the minister said that they wanted accountability of all and not of a single family.

He said the next prime minister of Pakistan would be from Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.
