A costly furlough

PPP, the most popular of all parties at one time, is suffering from a crisis of credibility. Founded by the charismatic late Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, it has deteriorated a lot due to behavior unbecoming of an elected representative government. The damage to the PPP has been done from within. One wonders how its leadership considered it appropriate to remain out of the country for over three weeks at the time of such a dire national crisis. The tour, if unavoidable, could have been easily cut short to less than three days. I fail to understand the logic and justification for our head of state to go on an extended tour while the country faces an insurgency, millions of its citizens are being displaced and the death toll is in the high hundreds. -MUZAMIL H., Sukkur, via e-mail, May 21.
