Kashmir a dispute between India, Pakistan: British HC

SRINAGAR (NNI) The British High Commissioner in New Delhi, Richard Stagg has said that Kashmir was a dispute and needed a political solution. Off course Kashmir is a dispute between India and Pakistan and nobody cane deny it. We want peaceful resolution of the dispute through peaceful means, Stagg told Greater Kashmir after meeting Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front Chairman, Muhammad Yasin Malik, here. We have come here to assess the latest situation. We are concerned about the issue and want a stable, peaceful and prosperous Kashmir, he added. He was accompanied by the First Secretary British High Commission, Victoria Whitford. The British delegation met Malik at JKLFs Maisuma office. I apprised the diplomats about the latest situation in Kashmir. I apprised them about Machil fake encounter case in which three innocents were killed by the army near Line of Control. I told them how police and army officers kill innocents in fake encounters for promotions and awards, Malik said. The JKLF chairman said that he also reminded the diplomats about their role in the resolution of Kashmir issue. I told them that it was moral responsibility of Britain to help in resolution of Kashmir issue as it was British who left the issue unresolved in 1947, he added. Earlier, the delegation met Hurriyat Conference (M) chairman, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq at his Nigeen residence here. I urged them to add Kashmir in Wests Af-Pak policy. I told them that peace process between India and Pakistan wont move forward till Kashmir isnt made priority in talks, Mirwaiz told Greater Kashmir. I also told them that Kashmir wasnt issue of good or bad governance as being projected by India. I urged them that UK should play a positive role in the settlement of the more than six-decade old dispute, he said. The Mirwaiz said that the British diplomats told him that they were monitoring the situation in Kashmir and UK was committed to help in resolution of the dispute. Earlier British High Commissioner Sir Richard Stagg, called on the Chief Minister Omar Abdullah here. In an hour long meeting the two discussed various socio economic and political developments in JK, an official spokesman said. The British High Commissioner also held detailed discussions with PDP President, Mehbooba Mufti on the political situation of the state, a PDP spokesman said.
