Shots in the dark

Here is what we have to do. Let us simply de-electrify some of our cities, that is stop their electric supply totally. Give them 6 months notice and just have them off the hook and keep them that way till power generation is back to normal. Sounds ridiculous? Yes, but when we were doing electrification left right and centre, didn't we know that we had hundreds of generals in Pakistan, and American agents like Shaukat Aziz? Another way to go is to divide big cities in sectors and shut down these sectors, one by one, for four hours a day at a stretch. Give advance warning so that the residents can organize their lives accordingly. Another solution is to produce more power from sources that are cheaper and indigenously available; biogas, cow dung, baggase, windmills etc. Let us do it all on a war footing. -AMJAD HABIB MIRZA, Lahore, via e-mail, October 17.
