ISLAMABAD - The incumbent PPP-led government has failed to address the miseries of people of Kashmir as well as the country by sidelining from its principled stance, Secretary General of the Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR) Dr Nazir Gilani said in a press conference here on Friday. Dr Nazir said that President Zardari in his address at the UN Security Council conference deviated from the vision of slain Benazir Bhutto regarding the solution of the lingering issue of AJK. Why did we need to slaughter a generation and put our people through unprecedented violations of human rights, he asked. Along with other representatives of his organization, he said that Kashmiri leaders on either side of the LOC till date have failed to make a demand that three UN-supervised Governments be installed at Srinagar, Muzaffarabad and Gilgit, adding, On the other hand they did not ask the various Governments of Pakistan or any other member of the United Nations about the non-agitation of Kashmir at the UN Security Council for 30 years. He said that the Government of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir has failed in its constitutional duty in line with UNCIP resolutions calling for self-determination since 1970. Jammu and Kashmir Council for Human Rights (JKCHR) has continued to advocate the case of Rights Movement of the people of Kashmir and has played a leading role at the UN in supporting the independence of judiciary, rule of law, and supremacy of the constitution in Pakistan and AJK, said Secretary General JKCHR Dr Syed Nazir Gilani. He alleged that President Zardari had avoided to make any reference to the suffering caused to the people and habitat of Kashmir. President Zardari even failed to honour the stand taken by Shaheed Benazir Bhutto at the UN General Assembly. Gilani argued that Benazir Bhutto was determined to resolve the Kashmir issue as per expectations of the people of AJK and Pakistan. Benazir Bhutto, he noted, was of the view that Forty-eight years of occupation have not crushed the spirit of a noble people, committed to the right of self determination, and committed to the ideals of the UN, placing their hopes on the United Nations pledge to hold a plebiscite to determine their future. Do not close your hearts, yours minds, to the torment of Kashmir. He stated that the question remains of when India would perform its duties and obligations regarding the peaceful solution of the lingering issue of Kashmir.
