The dithering on the vital issue of Kalabagh dam by the President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani is disheartening. One day he says that flood damage could have been minimized if the dam had been there yet another day he says the dam is a black cat in a dark room, which cannot be built due to lack of consensus. The point is whether Tarbela and Mangla were built by consensus when Field Marshal late Ayub Khan built Tarbela inspite of opposition of Sindh at that time. Perhaps when the life and death of a nation is concerned issues are decided by a strong man at the centre. Since we do not want another field marshal to build the dam it rests upon our Mard-i-Hur to rise to the occasion to seize the moment to become a hero by building the dam to save the nation. Only by this step, the sagging reputation of PPP could be retrieved to the lasting benefit of PPP. Otherwise, our potential hero would become a zero in the annals of time if Pakistan is doomed in the eyes of our future generations. DR. MUHAMMAD YAQOOB BHATTI, Lahore, October 28.
