ISLAMABAD - USAID Power Distribution Programmeme inaugurated a Planning and Engineering (P&E) Computer Center at Gepco. The CEO of Gepco Mehboob Alam unveiled the plaque while Technical Director Zakiuddin and Gepco senior staff was also present on the occasion. From USAID Power Distribution Programme, Chief of Party Craig VanDevelde, Chief Technical Advisor Dick Dumford, Deputy Chief of Party Saleem Arif and P&E Lead Shafiq ur Rehman were present.The USAID Power Distribution Programme is also helping other DISCOs establish similar centers and has provided successful trainings to P&E managers of all nine govt-owned power distribution companies (DISCOs). The P&E project of the USAID Power Distribution Programme aims to modernize the P&E dept of DISCOs, improving energy distribution.  Through the Programme, USAID is providing DISCOs with equipment and software, expert consultations, and introducing international best practices to ensure a more reliable supply of power to consumers.“The primary goal of the P&E project is to establish a systematic and comprehensive distribution system planning process within DISCOs, building the technical capacity to develop distribution system maps, perform load flow analyses, evaluate load forecasts, area planning and contingency planning, and develop medium- and long-term system rehabilitation and expansion projects based on technically sound solutions with minimum cost,” said Craig VanDevelde.

, Chief of Party of USAID’s Power Distribution Programme, at the opening ceremony.The four and a half year USAID Power Distribution Programme was announced by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2009 as being among the United States’ efforts to support the Government of Pakistan in reforming the power sector to mitigate the current energy crisis. The Programme is helping DISCOs improve their commercial performance by reducing losses, increasing revenues and improving customer services through the introduction of new technology and improved work practices.
