RAWALPINDI - Police have thwarted an attempt to smuggle weapons in Punjab from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by seizing a huge cache of arms and ammunition from a car on Motorway near Chakri Interchange, the area of Police Station Chontra, here on Tuesday.

The arms which were recovered from the car (IDM-2025) included SMG riffle 1, riffles 44 bore 6, riffles 12 bore 3, riffles 222 bore 4, riffle 5.56mmMP5 like 30 bore pistol 1, 20 pistols of 30 bore and a total of 11000 rounds of different kinds.

Superintendent of Police (SP) Rural Waheed-ur-Rehman Khattak, when contacted by this scribe, said that the police had received information that some smugglers would make an attempt to transport a huge cache of arms and ammunition to Punjab from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa via Motorway.

Taking action, a monitoring post was placed near Chakri Interchange, the SP said adding that the police meanwhile signaled to stop a suspected Honda car coming from Peshawar but the driver ignored it and tried to escape.

He added that a police mobile started chasing the car, which at some distance smashed into a median owing to which the driver lost his control over the car. As a result, the car’s tyres got burst and the driver managed to flee from the scene.

According to Waheed, police searched the car and recovered a huge cache of arms hidden in it.

A case (No.217) has been registered with Police Station (PS) Chontra and further investigation was underway, SP asserted.

To a query, he replied that the police had found the registration book of the car, which was registered in the name of a person living in Mardan.

On the other hand, as per information, shared by the Islamabad Motorway Police, a total of 19 riffles (SMG 1, riffle 44 bore 8, riffles 12 bore 4, riffles 22 bore 4, 1 riffle MP5 along with 35 magazines, 22 pistols of 30 bore along with 44 magazines and 10910 rounds of different bores) were recovered by officers of Motorway Police.
