LONDON-Daniel Radcliffe will play four-time Olympic gold medallist Sebastian Coe in a new film, it has been revealed.

The Harry Potter star has been cast as the record-breaking British athlete in Gold, according to Screen Daily.

The film is based on Pat Butcher’s book The Perfect Distance and will revolve around Coe’s rivalry with fellow athlete Steve Ovett in the years leading up to the Moscow Olympic Games in 1980.

Radcliffe, who recently denied rumours that he would be playing Freddie Mercury, will reunite with Woman in Black director James Watkins on the new project.

Christine Langan, head of BBC Films, said: ‘Compelling, funny and moving, Gold is a gem of a story and BBC Films is proud to be participating in bringing it to an international audience.’

Slumdog Millionaire’s Simon Beaufoy has written the script along with How to Train Your Dragon’s Will Davies. Coe won four Olympic medals in 1980 and 1984 as a middle-distance runner and regularly broke world records during his running career.
