LAHORE - The Lahore High Court on Tuesday set aside the appointment of Dr Shazia Qureshi, the wife of Punjab University vice-chancellor Dr Mujahid Kamran, as professor and Dean Law College of Punjab University.

Justice Syed Mansoor Ali Shah passed the order on a petition moved by Mr Javed Sami and Ms Shumaila Gul challenging Shazia’s appointment as dean and professor of PU Law College. However, the judge allowed her to serve the department as associate professor.

The petitioners took up the plea that Shazia’s appointment as professor and Dean of Faculty of Law was in sheer violation of the provisions of the Constitution of Pakistan and University of the Punjab Act, 1973.

They said her selection is result of mala fide intention and nepotistic exercise of statuary authority by the vice chancellor, who is her husband too. The applicants further submitted the selection of Dr Shazia to the said post is also made in violation of the guidelines of Higher Education Commission which have been adopted by the University vide its Notification No 1724/Acad, dated June 06, 2007.

Through the petition, the applicants also sought directions from court to require the university to hold the elections to the Senate of the University in accordance with the provision of the University Act and Election Statutes prior to the Senate meeting called by the University vide Notice dated February 13, 2015.

The judge heard the arguments of both parties and law officers appearing on behalf of the university and took notice of the fact that Senate of the Punjab University has not been constituted since 2008. The court directed the vice chancellor to make the PU Senate functional within five months.
