ISLAMABAD - Senate Committee of the Whole yesterday reviewed the pros and cons of revival of students unions in the education institutions across the country.

Chairman Senate asked Secretary Interior to submit the recommendations on the revival of students unions with the Senate Secretariat so that the Committee could discuss the arguments for and against it.

The body took up agenda items including proposals and input by panellists including Minister of State for Federal Education and Professional Training, Secretary Ministry of Interior and provincial Chief Secretaries regarding revival of student unions.

Secretary Interior briefed the Committee about the background of the student unions, their positive and negative perspectives and Pakistani laws regarding unions.

He told the Committee that Vice Chancellors of the universities should also review the unions as it was in the favour of the students.

Secretary Interior further said that students were allowed to adopt their political or any other activities outside their campuses.

He said that the union elections should be conducted and the students having good character should be allowed to contest union elections.

The Committee urged the Secretary Interior to examine the hurdles in the way of unions including violence, political activities etc.

The Secretary replied that Ministry of Interior will examine the laws and suggested for the regularisation of the unions to avoid any violence. The Committee expressed their interest in the constitution of the unions in the educational institutions and suggested for their regularisation.

The members told the Committee that students were approaching them for the revival of these unions.

The members referred the unions before the creation of Pakistan and said that Quaid-e-Azam mobilise the students for movement of a new country. The Committee said that unions were need of the hour and it should be allowed to work at schools and colleges level. The Committee also observed that VC's and professors role in the union was also important and they should be inducted.

Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani asked the Secretary Interior to hand over a copy of the recommendations to Senate Secretariat regarding student unions so that the Committee could discuss the suggestions. Chief Secretary Sindh also briefed the Committee about the initiatives taken by the provincial government regarding the student unions, their importance in the educational institutions.

Before the adjournment of the Committee meeting Chairman Senate Mian Raza Rabbani and other members of the Committee strongly condemned the terrorist attack at the Bacha Khan University, Charsada KPK and offered prayers for those martyred in the ambush.

The Committee sympathised with the families of deceased persons and prayed for the early recovery of the injured in the incident.

The Chairman said that Pakistan Army was engaged to curb the terrorism from all over the country with the full support of the nation.

He further said that the operation against militants would continue till their complete elimination.
