Nothing has perhaps shaped the course of history as the discovery or oil and gas has. The energy sector has always been a key enabler of living standards, as evidenced by the fact that agrarian societies would burn wood for warmth and cooking. With the invention of the steam engine however, the first transformation was made from being an agrarian to industrialised. Coal quickly became the preferred fuel because it was cheaper and more productive. It could facilitate wild growth and while oil had been discovered by the Chinese in 600 BC. It was through Colonel Drake that we actually got to use it as a commodity.
