Today’s no-confidence motion against the Prime Minister will only be third in Pakistan’s 75-year history. The first was tabled in 1989 against Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto, which she managed to overcome; the opposition fell short of their needed 119 votes by only 12.
In August 2006, Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz became the second chief executive to face the motion. Out of a needed 172 votes, the opposition only managed to secure 136, while those in favour of the Prime Minister numbered 201.
In today’s vote, Prime Minister Khan could go down in history as the first Prime Minister to lose his authority, and pave the way for a new coalition government.
