Uzbek who threatened Obama jailed 15 years in US

NEW YORK: A 27-year-old Uzbek resident of New York was sentenced on Friday to 15 years in a US prison for conspiring to support the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq and Syria. Abdurasul Hasanovich Juraboev posted a message online in August 2014 offering to kill then-President Barack Obama or bomb New York's beach resort Coney Island if ordered to do so by the IS group. He was arrested at home in Brooklyn in February 2015, after buying a plane ticket for Turkey, from where prosecutors said he planned to join up with militants. -AFP

Juraboev was arrested as part of a swoop on four terror suspects and subsequently pleaded guilty in August 2015.

US prosecutors said Friday they planned to deport him to Uzbekistan upon completion of his sentence.

A US-led coalition conducting air strikes against IS said this week that more than 95 percent of the territory once held by the extremist group in Iraq and Syria has now been liberated.
