Saanen goats arriving next month

ISLAMABAD (APP) - The Pakistan Agriculture Research Council (PARC) would import 1,000 Saanen goats from China to raise their bread in the country and bring about white revolution. About 1,000 Saanen goats are arriving next month, PARC Chairman Dr. Zafar Altaf told APP. A Saanen goat can give double milk than a buffalo, he added. Saanen goats are a white or cream-coloured breed of goat, named after the Saanen valley in Switzerland. Saanens are the largest of the goat dairy breeds which typically weigh 150 lb (68 kg) or more, with bucks weighing over 200 lb (91 kg). Its milk haa a lower butterfat content, about 2.5pc-3pc. Zafar Altaf said as compared to big animals, the Saanen goats can be raised on minimum inputs and have ability to produce milk more than that of buffaloes. The Saanen goat would be cost effective in terms of input and profitable in terms of production, he added. He said the PARC aims at enhancing milk production to cater domestic needs as well as to export it. It would help reduce poverty in the country besides generating employment opportunities in rural areas, he added. He said the National Agriculture Research Center (NARC) was working to encourage utilization of healthy animals for the milk production besides introducing appropriate feeds for them. The NARC is conducting feed development research and also providing various types of livestock feeds to the farming community. With the nutritionally balanced and cost effective feed , the farmers would be able to enhance livestock production, he added. To a question, he said that NARC has introduced a new and local chicken breed which would be organic and bird-flue resistant. The bird could be raised on local feed which would reduce its input cost and thereby the over all cost. It would be available on cheaper prices in the market and would be healthy for consumption as it would be raised on organic feed. He was of the view that the country has great potential to excel in agriculture and livestock fields which needed to be exploited for sustainable economic development and better future.
