Union demands pay raise, safe working conditions

PR LAHORE - Hundreds of electricity/Wapda workers took out protest march Monday under the aegis of All Pakistan WAPDA Hydro Electric Workers Union (CBA) at Nisbet Road, McLeod Road and Abbot Road, Lahore and held rally at Luxmi Chowk.

They demanded to the federal and provincial governments to raise pays and allowances of the employees engaged in government, semi-government and autonomous bodies and power sector by 50% and fix minimum wages at Rs20,000 per month and minimum pension at Rs.15,000 per month including Old-age Benefits Scheme Institution.

The rally was addressed by veteran trade union leader Khurshid Ahmad, general secretary of the union, who pointed out that the poor wage earners had been facing economic and social hardships due to high inflation. The rally was also addressed by other representatives of the union. By a resolution, the rally demanded to the government and the management of distribution companies to ensure safe working conditions for the field staff.

Earlier, the electricity/WAPDA workers held a youth conference at Bakhtiar Labour Hall, Lahore, which was attended by workers belonging to distribution, generation and transmission companies.
