RAWALPINDI - The Adiala Jail authorities yesterday released Brig (r) Muhammad Ali Khan who had been awarded five-year imprisonment by a field general court marshal in August 2012 for having links with banned outfit, Hizb ut-Tahrir, sources told The Nation.
They said Brig (r) Muhammad Ali Khan was set free after completing his sentence in the jail. The convicted military officer is said to have received many remissions in his sentence, the sources added.
Brig (r) Muhammad Ali Khan along with four majors of Pakistan Army was convicted on August 2, 2012, for their links with the banned outfit, Hizb ut-Tahrir, and conspiring against the army.
Maj Sohail Akbar was awarded three-year rigorous imprisonment and Maj Jawad Baseer two-year RI while Maj Inayat Aziz and Major Iftikhar were awarded one year and six months RI each.
According to available details, Brig (r) Muhammad Ali Khan was arrested in May 2011 for his links with Hizb ut-Tahrir. Initially, the military authorities alleged Brig Khan along with other military officers was planning to overthrow the then civilian government. Later, however, the prosecution charged the military officers with having links with Hizb ut-Tahrir.
The prosecution had presented five witnesses against Brig Khan and other convicts. The witnesses testified that they had been asked by Brig Khan to join Hizb ut-Tahrir and work for their cause.
