Twitter has been hit by ‘Aunty Pakistan’ (@AuntyPakistan). The account starting tweeting from August 30 2015, but it already has 2,119 followers. And the number is growing after every tweet!
The account’s tweets are bold and blunt. It targets sexism and misogyny in a quintessential patriarchal society. The account voices the concerns of women in a society where gender discrimination prevails and many women are unable to express their opinion openly.

The account has a display picture of a lady smoking in Pakistani cultural dress and the cover photo states ‘Papu yar tang na kar warna pyar hojae ga’ (Hey man! Don’t disturb or you will fall in love). Aunty Pakistan describes herself as ‘Peechay peechay aanda meri chaal waikhi jaye... Main Aurat hon, Ornament nahi. Also known as #Pakistani #Ghaddar #Muslim #Kafir #Mother’.
Even though ‘Aunty Pakistan’ has been welcomed by many, understandably it already has many detractors. A large number of people have reacted negatively and have been trying to get the account suspended. But it seems Aunty Pakistan is here to stay as a much needed voice for Pakistani women.
