Parnell outshines role models in South African romp

CENTURION (AFP) - Barely a year after captaining the South African Under-19 team, left-arm swing bowler Wayne Parnell played a match-winning role as South Africa defeated Australia by seven wickets in the second one-day international at Centurion Park on Sunday. The 19-year-old and fast bowler Dale Steyn blew away the Australian top order batting, reducing the tourists to 19 for five after they won the toss and made first use of what captain Ricky Ponting admitted was a good batting pitch.Australia were bowled out for 131, with Callum Ferguson hitting 50 to lead a partial recovery. Parnell took four for 25 and Steyn four for 27.South Africa needed just 26.2 overs to level the five-match series after being beaten by 141 runs in the opening clash in Durban on Friday. "Two years ago I was watching these guys on TV and now I'm playing with them," said Parnell."Everything is new for me. The most important thing is to stay calm and do the basics well."Parnell, who was awarded a contract by Cricket South Africa last week, said he had studied two of opponents, Mitchell Johnson and Nathan Bracken. , as well as India's Zaheer Khan, as leading practitioners of left-arm pace bowling. It was the first time Steyn and Parnell had bowled in tandem with the new ball in what South African captain Graeme Smith said was a tactical switch. Parnell replaced veteran Makhaya Ntini in one of three changes in the South African team. The combination proved devastating as the new ball swung sharply. Parnell's ability to swing the ball into right-handers, as well as making it move away, complemented the sheer pace and away swing of Steyn. Parnell had Ponting caught behind off a ball that left him, while Clarke and Hussey were trapped leg before wicket with full deliveries that swung late. At one stage Parnell had taken three for three in four overs. Steyn started the slide when he bowled Brad Haddin off an inside edge in the first over. He also had David Hussey caught behind in his opening spell. Ferguson and Johnson put on 63 off 107 balls for the seventh wicket in the only substantial partnership of the innings before Johnson was deceived by a doosra from off-spinner Johan Botha. Ferguson made 50 off 83 balls before falling to a vicious lifter from Steyn in the fast bowler's second spell, gloving a catch to backward point. "We were miles off today. We have some talking to do," said Ponting. The Australian captain said he was concerned at the failure of any of his top order batsmen to make a big score. Herschelle Gibbs fell early to Johnson but Smith and Jacques Kallis put on 69 for the second wicket to take their team more than halfway to the target. Needing wickets to have any chance of salvaging the match, Ponting bowled out Johnson, his main strike bowler, inside the first 22 overs. Johnson took two for 47 in his ten overs. "We weren't good enough on Friday night," conceded Smith. "We were pretty honest with ourselves. We talked about a few things and made a few tactical changes. Credit has to go to the bowlers, led by Wayne and Dale." SCOREBOARD AUSTRALIA B. Haddin b Steyn 1 M. Clarke lbw b Parnell 5 R. Ponting c Boucher b Parnell 8 D. Hussey c Boucher b Steyn 1 M.
