Smoking kills 0.1 million people every year in Pakistan: Stats

ISLAMABAD: Around 0.1 million people die in Pakistan every year due to smoking while consumption of sheesha, betel leaf and naswar increases chances of cancer.

According to the experts, at least 5 million people die across the world every year due to smoking. Doctors said that cause of lungs cancer in 90 percent of male and 80 percent of female deaths is smoking.

Ratio of smoking-caused diseases and deaths in developed countries is lesser than under-developed countries owing to stricter laws relating to tobacco.

Heart specialists are of the opinion that a major reason behind cardiac arrest in smoking.

It was reported last month that the Federal Board of Revenue was mulling increasing taxes on cigarettes. For which, the brands were reportedly divided into two sets with one likely to get an upward revision of Rs 4 and other of Rs 9.

According to FBR s recommendation, Rs 200 will be hiked for every 1,000 cigarettes while Rs 450 for another set of 1,000 cigarettes.

The imposition of the duty tax will be implemented through two different sets of cigarette brands.
