Rawalpindi - The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) yesterday claimed improving situation of water availability in 13 union councils of the PP-06.
The water supply system of the 13 urban UCs was handed over to the WASA by the provincial government in recent past. The government took this step on the recommendations of Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, informed WASA spokesman Muhammad Umar.
He said earlier the water supply system of these 13 UCs was operated by local CBOs/NGOs and people were facing acute shortage of clean drinking water due to non-functioning of existing tube-wells, percolation wells and damaged/rusty distribution network. The areas facing water shortage include Shakrial South, Shakrial North, Khanna Dak,
Gangal, Dhoke Munshi, Chaklala, Kotha Kalan, Lakhan, Chak Jalal Din,
Morgah and Dhoke Choudrian, he informed.
After taking over the control of these UCs, the WASA has taken immediate steps to improve the water supply situation including repair of existing tube-wells, percolation wells, electric motors, transformers and water supply lines, he said adding that most of the electric connections of tube-wells had been disconnected due to non-payment of bills, which were restored by WASA after payment of all outstanding dues. “With these steps the water supply situation is improved visibly and supply of clean drinking water is increased from 80,000 gallons to 400,000 gallons which is an achievement by WASA,” he added.
Meanwhile, Managing Director WASA Raja Shaukat Mahmood while briefing the about water supply situation in PP-06 said that besides all the aforesaid measures taken, the WASA has also established following complaint offices in these localities to facilitate the public and rapid rectification of complaints are being ensured.
The MD WASA further added that a mega project comprising on installation of new tube-wells, overhead reservoirs, ground storage tanks and laying of new water supply lines has been approved by the Punjab government on the recommendations of Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan.
The work on said project has been started. He said that water supply situation would improve after completion of this project.
He also clarified the WASA has not established any Water Bowser Section on Adyala Road, therefore, overcharging by the WASA in this regard was baseless. He said the WASA and other departments had dredged all the sewerage systems and nullahs in Rawalpindi to avoid flood in monsoon.
