IDPs left homes to protect country, says Rabbani

ISLAMABAD - A two-member delegation of International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) called on Chairman Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Senator Mian Raza Rabbani, at his office in the Parliament House on Thursday. Pascal Cuttat, who was accompanied by Protection Coordinator Mariam Zampatti, headed the delegation. The ICRC representatives explained in detail the efforts being undertaken by ICRC individually and in collaboration with other government agencies for the immediate relief of internally displaced persons (IDPs) of Swat and other regions. They also shed light on the future plans of ICRC regarding facilitating the IDPs. Senator Mian Raza Rabbani appreciated the efforts of the ICRC on behalf of the Parliamentary Committee on National Security and the government of Pakistan. He said that the mass exodus of civilian population had no parallel in contemporary history. He appreciated the IDPs spirit of sacrifice by abandoning their hearths and homes to protect the Federation of Pakistan. He also appreciated the generosity of the families who have opened their homes and hujras for IDPs in this hour of trial. Rabbani apprised the delegation of the various steps being taken by the federal and provincial governments to ameliorate the sufferings of IDPs. He emphasised that the question of the IDPs did not pertain to a particular province but was a national concern and the entire nation was committed to the cause. He recalled that the provincial governments of Sindh and Punjab had contributed in this national effort not only by donating to the Prime Ministers Relief Fund but also by providing material help to the concerned camps. He reassured the delegation that the country would overcome this national crisis through the will, determination and combined efforts of the nation.
