NA speaker, deputy elections on June 3


ISLAMABAD  - While all is set to transfer power to newly elected government at centre, the elected members including over 100 new faces almost from all the big political parties will take oath tomorrow and election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker would be conducted on June 3 (Monday) through secret ballot.
The elected members will elect leader of the house on June 5, according to the tentative schedule issued by the NA Secretariat for the first session of the national assembly after the general elections.
The House will be adjourned for June 3 for election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker.
The nomination papers for the slot of leader of the house would be delivered to the Secretary on June 4 by 2 pm. Election for the Prime Minister shall be held through division on June 5.
It is relevant to mention here that the PML-N has formally nominated its chief Nawaz Sharif for the office of Pakistan Prime Minister after the party moved towards a simple majority in the 342-member National Assembly or Pakistan’s lower house of parliament.
National Assembly Secretariat on this occasion has made special arrangements for facilitation of Members-elect by establishing special facilitation desks in Parliament House, Parliament Lodges, Government Hostel and Benazir International Airport, Islamabad.
The elaborated security arrangements have almost been finalised for holding the inaugural session of National Assembly. The outgoing speaker Dr Fehmida Mirza would conduct the business of the House by administering oath from the new members.
Being the majority party, PML-N has nominated its Chief Mian Mohammad Nawaz Sharif for the slot of Prime Ministership. It will be his third term in the PM office.
ECP notifies 3 candidates for reserved seats
The Election Commission of Pakistan on Thursday notified three candidates on reserved seats, two of which had fallen vacant due to the resignation of the respective returned candidates.
According to details, the Commission has declared Shahida Rehmani from Pakistan People’s Party-Parliamentarians (PPPP), as returned candidate for the seat reserved for women in the National Assembly from Sindh, which had fallen vacant due to the resignation tendered by the PPP-P leader Faryal Talpur. The electoral body has also declared Romana Jalil from Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) as returned candidate for the women-reserved seat in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, which fell vacant due to the resignation of Naeem Akhtar from the JUI-F.
In addition, the poll authority has notified Dr Ramesh Kumar Vankwani from Pakistan Muslim League (N) as returned candidate for the minorities-reserved seat in the NA.
