KARACHI - Renowned poetess Ada Jafarey passed away on Thursday. She was 90.
She was born in Badayun, UP, British India on 22nd August 1924. Later on in 1947 at the time of independence, she migrated to Pakistan.  
She was called ‘The First Lady of Urdu Poetry’. She was also an author and known as a prominent figure in contemporary Urdu literature.
Ada Jafarey got numerous awards in her life including Adamjee Literary Award by the Pakistan Writers' Guild in 1967 for her second poetic collection, S?h?ahr-i Dard, Medal of Excellence in 1981, Baba-e Urdu, Dr. Maulvi Abdul Haq Award in 1994 and Quaid-e Azam Literary Award in 1997. She was also the recipient of various international awards from literary societies in North America and Europe.
The Government of Pakistan conferred upon her the Pride of Performance Award for Literature in 2002. She was the recipient of the Kamal-e Fan Award for lifetime achievement in literature by the Pakistan Academy of Letters in 2003. Ada Jafarey published her first collection of poems, ‘Main? Saz ?hun??ti Rahi’ in 1950. She has published five collections of Urdu poetry, in addition to an autobiography, short essay, and 40 research papers. She also published her collection of Urdu Haiku, Saz-i Suk?h?n. Her autobiography, ‘Jo Rahi so BeK?h?abri Rahi’ has also been published.
