Involvement of youth in diabetes awareness can change society: Wasim Akram

Karachi: The latest estimates from the International Diabetes Foundation Atlas indicate that there are 382 million people, living with diabetes worldwide.

A further 316 million people are currently at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes with the number expected to increase to almost 500 million within a generation. Researches show that Pakistan has high prevalence diabetes, according to latest research 10 % of Pakistani Population is suffering from the Diabetes; we are ranked 5th on diabetes prevalence list. On other hand up to half of all people with diabetes globally remain undiagnosed.

These facts and figures reiterate the importance of urgent action. Most cases of type 2 diabetes can be prevented and the serious complications of diabetes can be avoided through healthy lifestyles and living environments that encourage and facilitate healthy behavior.

Experts say that the public should also be advised to monitor their blood glucose level and to follow healthy life style to avoid the complications in diabetes. Our youth is getting advance in technology and due to lack of physical activities the prevalence of Type 2 Diabetes is increasing, which is very alarming for the country.

As there is a lack of diabetes prevention and monitoring awareness, Accu Chek organized Accu Chek Wellness Fair 2015 at Port Grand Karachi in which large number of people participated. The fair included a lot of activities like, Free Blood Glucose Testing, Nutrition consultancy, Diet Plan, Fitness tips, Games, Live Music and much more. The legend player Wasim Akram attended the ceremony and also took an oath from the youth for Accu-Chek’s new initiative of Youth Task Force. This new project is a CSR activity in which the youth will be involved in creating diabetes awareness. This is very good initiative to utilize the Youth force of Pakistan in promoting the awareness of rapidly growing diseases like Diabetes. This event was conducted by the world largest blood glucose meter brand Accu-Chek on World Diabetes Day2015.

On this occasion, country head Sohail Malik said “we always believe in educating people for a better lifestyle with diabetes. We not only want to make people aware but also to make them understand that diabetes is not a disease it’s a lifestyle.”

Also, Wasim Akram commented “I am happy to be a part of such an event where I experience people actively participating in healthy lifestyle. This is how I have maintained myself. Healthy Living is the key for living with diabetes. Involvement of Youth in diabetes awareness can change the society significantly, he further added” 

A large number of citizens attended this healthy, active and colorful event and not only get the knowledge but also enjoyed with games, live music and delicious food and scenery of Karachi’s most beautiful place Port Grand.
