KARACHI   - About 80 million people are suffering from Non- Communicable Diseases (NCDs), also known as chronic diseases, like, cardiac diseases, stroke, asthma and diabetes in Pakistan. 
These views were expressed by Professor of Neurology Department of Medicine, Aga Khan University (AKU), Dr Muhammad Wasay, while speaking at a media briefing on National Health Sciences Research Symposium on non-communicable diseases (like, cardiac diseases, stroke, asthma, diabetes, etc.) held at AKU here on Monday.
“They are of long duration and generally slow progression. More than 70 percent deaths occur due to NCD disease like hypertension, cancer, diabetes, cardiovascular disease & dyslipidemia, mental health & depression, stroke, injuries & trauma, tobacco abuse, chronic respiratory diseases and chronic kidney diseases, while 25 to 30 percent deaths reports due infectious disease every year in the country”, he said.
Co-Chair, Organising Committee and Senior Instructor, AKU School of Nursing and Midwifery Saima Sachwani was also present on this occasion. 
Dr Wasay said 40million  people were suffering from high-blood, 8m from diabetic, 18m from high cholesterol, 32m from heart disease, 24m obese, 22m smokes, 20m chewing tobacco, 50m mental health disorder,1m trauma injuries, while  estimated annual incidence of stoke in Pakistan is 250/100,000, translating to 350,000 new cases every year (1000 every day) .
He revealed that 800 people die every day due to heart diseases, 400 dies from cancer ever day, 200 death occur to chronic respiratory disease per day, 50 death from trauma & RTA per day (70 percent are pedestrians and motorist without helmet) and 400 cases of deaths from stoke  daily in the country.
Dr Wasay said 30,000 amputations due to DM and trauma per year (100 per day), more than 300,000 patients on dialysis due to kidney failure,  40,000 go to dialysis every year (100 per day), approximately 5,000 to 7,000 people commit suicide annually in Pakistan, while 50,000 to 150,000 cases of attempt suicide across the country. He said majority suicide and attempt suicides people under the age of 30 year.
