20 held as funeral ensues violent protest in Karachi

KARACHI - A large contingent of police rushed to Ancholi when the participants of a funeral procession of two victims of sectarian violence went berserk on their way back from Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard on Monday.A minibus and several pushcarts were set alight near Edhi Morgue in Sohrab Goth by unidentified arsonists emerging from the participants, prompting a gridlock across half of the city. As a result, main thoroughfares, including Shahrah-e-Pakistan, and important arteries were closed to motorists. Mediapersons, covering the funeral procession of Taseer Abbas Zaidi and Dr Mohsin Jaffar, who was killed on Saturday in Gulberg area, were also attacked by some enraged protesters. Twenty arrests were made when the police used teargas shells and batons to quell the protesters chanting slogans against the government and law-enforcement agencies for their failure to ensure peace in the city. Witnesses said that Ancholi and its surrounding areas gave the look of a battlefield, where the protesters and police personnel clashed. Rage in Ancholi was evident when the reports of the killing of 24-year-old Syed Taseer Abbas Zaidi poured in. He was the younger brother of renowned ‘nohakhawan’ Raza Abbas and a member of the Anjuman Tanzeem Husssaini. Waiting for his company van at a bus stop, the victim, son of Syed Shakir Zaidi, was attacked by a bike-borne armed duo at around 8:30 in the morning. He was hit by three bullets. After committing the crime, the culprits managed to flee from the scene, however. The body was ferried to the Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities and later dispatched to Ancholi imambargah, where the body of Dr Jaffar Mohsin was already placed for funeral. Both the victims were laid to rest in Wadi-e-Hussain graveyard. Maulana Kausar led prayers.Investigators said that the sectarian strife led to killing of Taseer Abbas.After his murder, tension simmered in Samanabad, Gulberg and other areas of Ancholi, where shops and major markets were closed down. It took the police several hours to disperse the protestors. However, several areas of FB remained tensed. No case was registered till the filing of this report. At least a dozen people, including lawyers and a doctor, killed in sectarian violence in January alone.
