LAHORE Poetry on Canvas, a painting exhibition by famous painter and poet Aslam Kamal, unfolding more meanings of the poetry of Faiz Ahmed Faiz, is being organised by the Lahore Museum in collaboration with Pakistan Cultural Heritage Carvan Society. The exhibition will open on Saturday (June 4) at the museums gallery. On the occasion, a series of 44 paintings, narrating the famous ghazals and poems of Faiz like 'Aaj Bazaar men Pa Bajolan Chalo, will be put on display. It may be mentioned here that the exhibition is going to be organised first time in Lahore. However, it had been displayed at Islamabad as well as in Germany, Birmingham and Bradford. According to the painter, the series has been painted in a long time of 15 years. Aslam Kamal while talking to TheNation on Tuesday said: I have started work on the series in 1996, however, some paintings included in the series had been painted in early 1980s. He said the year 1977 was declared as Iqbals Year by the government of Pakistan and that time he had displayed a series on Iqbals poetry at the Lahore Museums gallery. He further added that he had the honour to paint the profound poetry of Iqbal and Faiz. He said Iqbal was my spiritual teacher whereas Faiz was my intimate elder friend and companion. Aslam further said he had painted Iqbal with special preparations. Faizs poetry spells out conviction of belief and commitment to his idealism. I tries to unfold real meanings of his poetry, the meaning behind the words, Kamal added. Aslam Kamal is celebrated as a painter of interpretation of the poetic works of Iqbal and Faiz. He is also a pioneer of modern Islamic calligraphy. Kamals spiritual and artistic journey constitutes a unique contribution to the development of Islamic calligraphic art. Kamals mastery of the brush, his choice of colours and the near abstract, geometric design of his calligraphic works combine to produce works of great beauty that are instantly recognisable as his alone. Director Lahore Museum Humaira Alam said the work of Aslam Kamal on Faizs poetry could be illustrate in other words the intellectual atmosphere of a studio whose painter enjoyed and suffered as well the creative companionship of the poet from darlings door to gallows. As a poet himself, Aslam can well understand, feel and express poetry in a position of full command to transfer complete imagery of the poetry on canvas, she added.
