LAHORE - The government will establish ten Handicraft Schools during the current fiscal, according to Social Welfare Department of City District Government Lahore.
At present, there are 64 handicraft schools which are already functional and a large number of women have attained and many are still attaining training of stitching to become effective members of society.
The new 10 handicrafts schools would be set up in Kahna Ferozpur Road, Haloki, Bhaseen, Hair, Minhala, Harbans Pura, Basra, Paddana, Pangali and Peer Naseer localities. Similarly, CDGL’s Sanatzar in Allama Iqbal Town offers eighty different courses which include stitching, cooking, designing, beautification etc.
As per the available data, more than seven thousand females are getting training of required courses from Sanatzar every year. The CDGL’s Darul Aman taking care of more than 1,500 females along with their 500 children and providing homelike atmosphere at Darulaman.
Keeping in view problems of widows, 70 bedded Kashana Home Township is already functional and facilitating the widows. Last year, more than four hundred children who ran away from their homes or lost, stayed at Nighebaan Center located at Ch. Colony.
Data of CDGL’s social welfare department reveals that more than three lac patients got free medicine from eighteen major government hospitals of CDGL and Health Department Punjab through social welfare department officers deputed in said hospitals.
In this regard DCO/Administrator City District Government Lahore revealed that CDGL would expand the capacity of Daycare Centre located in Wahdat Colony from 20 to 75 children within this year. The DCO says that now the focus of social welfare department is to activate the deactivated NGOs, working in different areas. He said registration of non-functional NGOs would be cancelled.
Right now, 1,233 NGOs are registered with social welfare department, which are working on women welfare, prisoners’ welfare, Education and health sector, drug eradication, blood donor, human rights, youth affairs.
A massive campaign against baggers is going on in Lahore and up till now 6,904 baggers have been arrested by teams of social welfare from different places of city. The captured baggers have been sent to newly constructed baggers home, Edhi and Subhani Homes.
Meanwhile, Punjab Chief Secretary Khizar Hayat Gondal directed the district coordination officers that construction work of dilapidated buildings of government schools be started immediately.
According to a press release, the chief secretary chaired a meeting at Civil Secretariat on Monday. He said that all available resources were being provided for improvement in education sector. He ordered that construction of dilapidated buildings of government schools be started forthwith as funds have been released for it.
He directed that all possible measures be adopted for achieving targets of enrolment campaign in schools, saying that no negligence will be tolerated in this regard. He said that education is key to progress and prosperity and the Punjab Government is paying special attention to this important sector.
The chief secretary also ordered stepping up crackdown on sale of unwholesome meat. He said that sale of unhygienic and haram meat will not be tolerated. He mentioned that elements involved in this business deserve maximum punishment. He also directed that a strategy be evolved to put an end to this heinous business once and for all.
Secretaries of Schools Education and Food Departments gave detailed briefing to the meeting. Those among present were: Senior Member Board of Revenue, Secretaries of different departments, Director General Punjab Food Authority, Commissioner Lahore Division, DCO Lahore.
