8 Camp Jail cops transferred for harassing captives

LAHORE - Provincial Minister Prisons Chaudhry Abdul Ghafoor during his surprise visit to the Camp Jail has transferred eight officials of the jail on charges of harassing prisoners and locking them up in death cell after severe torture only to get gratification. He also got released 28 such prisoners from the clutches of these alleged corrupt officials who had clear torture marks on their bodies, claimed the minister while talking to The Nation here on Saturday. The minister said that he on the directives of his leader Mian Shahbaz Sharif had visited the Camp Jail, as his leadership was committed to eliminate corruption from the province and country as well. "I have asked one of the intelligence agency chief to trace out assets of the senior officers of jails which they had developed during their service in this department and after that they would be brought to justice," he pledged. He said, "On Saturday I paid a surprise visit to the Camp jail and witnessed that the prisoners were being treated inhumanly and the doctor was absent from his duty." He said on the complaints of the prisoners he transferred eight officials of the jail to the far-flung districts of the province. "I had been receiving complaints against Abdur Razzaq Niazi Deputy Superintendent Camp Jail since a long time. I warned him repeatedly but he remained unmoved. Ultimately, I had to transfer him to Rajanpur district as punishment." Among the others who were transferred included Assistant Superintendents, Farrukh Cheema, and Ali Akbar, Head Warders Muhammad Boota and Ghazanfar Gujjar, Warders Muhamamd Ramzan and Siddique Goraya. Ch Abdul Ghafoor said that he also received complaints about the negligence of the duty doctor, Hamid, that he was not paying attention towards the prisoners. "I have reported to the secretary health about his (doctor's) non-performance and also that he was not capable to be assigned any responsibility." He said the police had imprisoned about six to seven thousand addicted people in the jails against minor offences. He pledged that his government was chalking out a strategy to get these addicts treated at mental hospital for their rehabilitation. The Punjab govt was also considering to provide more prisons vans to the prison department so that they could transport their prisoners to the courts easily.
