Lahore - The British Council yesterday launched a new network of libraries across Pakistan at the inaugural ceremony of a new, purpose-built library in Lahore.

British Council Chief Executive Ciaran Devane, UK High Commissioner Thomas Drew,Punjab Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmad Khan and Higher Education Minister Zakia Shahnawaz cut the ribbon during an inauguration ceremony for a library in Lahore.

The libraries project is intended to foster creative expression and building greater cultural links between the UK and Pakistan.

Speaking on the occasion, Rana said the library will provide a convening space for the youth of city.

A handout quoted the minister as saying: "We are extremely delegated to strengthen our exciting relationship with the British Council in Pakistan by finding synergies within its library offer to support the Government of Punjab in its digital library ambitions across the province. "

Devane stated: "The British  Council is a global organization with a local approach; our library in Lahore is  testament to our commitment to creating best of UK content, our libraries will  position themselves as culture hubs where an exchange of creativity, connectivity and ideas can take place. The British Council is dedicated to providing long term impact in the communities it serves."

Thomas Drew said: "British Council Libraries have a fabulous legacy in Pakistan. The new libraries in Lahore and Karachi, and the national digital library, will not just offer English language books and material in print and online, but will also strengthen the human relationship between our two countries and offer a space for cultural debate."
