Mystery remains unsolved over PTI-AML alliance

LAHORE – Mystery remains unsolved over the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Awami Muslim League (AML) electoral alliance. Some TV channels on Wednesday reported that an electoral alliance had been reached between the PTI and AML during a meeting between Imran Khan and Sheikh Rasheed Ahmed. However, central PTI leaders contacted by TheNation have different storylines over the mystery of an electoral coalition between the PTI and AML. PTI vice chairman Shah Mehmood Qureshi when contacted said that he had no information about an electoral alliance between his party and the AML. PTI president Javed Hashmi when reached said that party was in contact with the AML chief for quite sometime, however he could not comment further over the issue. Arif Alvi, secretary general PTI, when contacted said he was not aware of the developments of the meeting between Imran Khan and Sheikh Rasheed, however according to Alvi’s hunch only seat adjustment with Sheikh Rasheed could be finalized between the meeting of Imran Khan and Sheikh Rasheed. It is surprising that three top leaders of the PTI didn’t know about a major development in the party or they are not taken onboard by the party chief while giving nod to AML head for an electoral arrangement. If it is the case then the party claiming itself real practitioner of democratic values might not differ from other mainstream parties to whom it desires to send home by labeling the enteritis as non-democratic forces. Meanwhile, another key leader of the PTI requesting anonymity told this correspondent that only seat adjustment had been finalised with Sheikh Rasheed, as he has nothing to offer to his party. He informed that certain senior party leaders belonging to the new entrants group in recent party meetings advised Imran Khan that they could not succeed through solo flight in the next elections and the PTI should at least make seat adjustments with parties sitting outside the Parliament if not with the parties’ part of the government. While, the only consideration in the case of Sheikh Rasheed for seat adjustment could be his high profile and aggressive posture against the mainstream political parties, which could certainly benefit the party if Sheikh reached the Parliament. The same leader further informed that PTI can made seat adjustments with Jamaat-i-Islami, other religious parties and nationalist parties of Balochistan and Sindh in the next polls, while efforts are already underway in this regard. Sheikh Rasheed, AML chief cannot be reached for getting his point of view over a political arrangement with the PTI despite the repeated efforts of this scribe.
