Edhi officials hand over six months old baby to mother

LAHORE- The official of Edhi Welfare Centre Lahore on Monday produced six months old suckling baby in the Lahore High Court whom his estranged father had abandoned at Township centre after having a quarrel with his wife. The judge handed over the baby to his mother present in the court. On previous hearing, Justice Khalil Ahmad had directed Edhi Centre Lahore to produce baby boy in the court after officials had taken a stance that the child could not be brought back from Karachi head office because it was difficult for them to identify the petitioner's baby among thousands of abandoned children living over there. The judge passed this order on a habeas corpus petition filed by Sana Butt, a resident of Rana Town, Shahdara, seeking recovery of her six-month son, Usman Butt, from the custody of Edhi Welfare Centre. The petitioner submitted that she married Imran Butt three years ago and had a child. She said she had a quarrel with her husband who with a view to take revenge on her snatched the minor from her and took him away to some unknown place. She said she with the help of her relatives left no stone unturned to trace the whereabouts of her suckling baby but all in vain. One day, she said, her husband Imran came to home and disclosed that he had handed over the child to Edhi Welfare Centre, Township. The petitioner said she approached the Edhi officials for the return of her child but they did not cooperate with her. They prolonged the matter on one or other pretext and ultimately they refused to return the child. She said the minor is a suckling baby and desperately needs love and lap of mother and if he is not recovered and handed over to her there is a possibility of his death due to improper care and food.  She, therefore, prayed to the court to direct the Edhi administration to produce the child before the court and hand him over to her. PRCL directed to waive line rent of 500 subscribers Lahore Consumer Court Judge Syed Maruf Ahmedali has directed Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) to waive the line rent of 500 subscribers whose telephones lines remained suspended for 104 days. The judge passed this order on a petition of Muhammad Sharif of More Khunda, District Nankana Sahib. The judge ordered the PTCL to refund line rent of Rs 1,530 for the period his telephone remained disconnected. He also directed it to pay Rs 5,000 as cost amount of the case within 10 days. The petitioner submitted that his telephone line remained disconnected for 104 days but he had been paying the line rent regularly which was illegal and unconstitutional. He requested the court to direct the PTCL authorities to refund the amount of the line rent. On the other hand the counsel for the PTCL appearing before the court submitted that the main cable of the telephone line remained disconnected for 104 days due to construction of road from Jaranwala to More Khunda by the Provincial Highway Department. He said it was not the fault on the part of the PTCL, adding that they were willing to refund the line rent to the petitioner. In his written order the judge ruled that 500 telephone numbers remained closed during the construction of the road. Under the law it was for the PTCL to waive the line rent of those subscribers whose telephone remained disconnected.
