Sultry weather to persist

LAHORE - Plains of the country including Lahore remained in the grip of muggy weather yesterday with experts predicting the prevailing conditions to persist during the next couple.

Weather remained hot and dry in most parts of the country. However, rain/dust-thundershower occurred at isolated places in Malakand, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala divisions, Fata, Gilgit-Baltistan and Kashmir.

Though the mercury dropped below 40 degree Celsius in many cities including Lahore, high humidity made the weather sultry, causing people to sweat profusely throughout the day.

Maximum and minimum temperature in Lahore was recorded 36C and 20C respectively. Relative humidity in the evening was recorded 45 per cent.

People avoided unnecessarily coming out, decreasing traffic on otherwise busy roads at noon and in the afternoon. Lahore canal as usual attracted large number of people including women and children.

According to the experts, low pressure lies over central parts of the country with trough extending south-eastward. Weak moist currents from Arabian Sea are penetrating eastern parts of the country and likely to continue during next 2-3 days. Westerly wave is affecting Northern Areas.

Meteorological department has forecast mainly hot and dry weather for most parts of the country during the next couple of days. However, isolated rain/dust-thundershowers with strong gusty winds are expected in Malakand, Hazara, Peshawar, Rawalpindi, Gujranwala, Lahore divisions, Islamabad and Kashmir.
