Transfixed ashore on a shipwreck

We, as Pakistanis, love Pakistan. Some have more claims on patriotism than others, but most of us love the sound of the name. Too many sacrifices in the long struggle for this country are all described in brevity of the name 'Pakistan. Therefore, it hurts even more when Pakistan, our Pakistan, is termed an extremist or a failed state, or a Banana Republic. All of us are sad and angry at the deteriorating, decaying conditions in our homeland. I migrated to America thirty-nine years ago but there is this connection with this country that I cannot break. We hear horrible tales of violence, injustice, corruption and incompetence. I am resigned to the fate of our people. Whatever will be, will be. -QAISAR SULTAN, Lahore, January 31.
