No boy scout mission

Colonel Riaz Jafri in his letter to The Nation on May 25 is critical of Mian Nawaz Sharif for not allowing distribution of 15 trucks of atta until a party MNA had arrived on the scene to do the needful. He would rather that the right hand did not know what the left is doing. Politics is not a boy scout mission. It is a game of numbers in which the party that can win over more people to its side comes into power. PPP is exploiting to the hilt the accidental 'martyrdom' of Benazir Bhutto. Hospitals, airports and roads are being named after her. State charity programs are being carried out in her name. Jiyalas in their thousands are being employed irrespective of whether any jobs exists or not even though that means crippling the already crippled public sector. All this is being done in aid of PPP trying to win the hearts and minds of the voters. Colonel Jafri does not see all this publicity going on in broad daylight at state expense but is quick to spot PML-N trying to get some publicity from 15 trucks of atta. Mind you, the atta is free. Should not the beneficiary know who is providing free atta at his or her doorstep? -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, May 28.
