You trust me, I trust you

It is very rightly pointed out that the solution to Pakistan's present terrorism-related internal crisis lies in defining and gaining control over its borders. We have had three wars with India. History proves that war is not a viable option to resolve conflicts, especially conflicts as complex as this. Ordinary border disputes can be settled through mediation and negotiation. This would take time, though, and for successful negotiations on this, we would need to build on trust. Since India and Pakistan are archrivals and have notoriously porous borders, Confidence Building Measure (CBMs) become necessary to restore trust of the people on both sides. CBMs taken by the present regime with all the neighboring countries, including India, are a concrete basis for conflict-resolution. These CBMs show the political will and seriousness of the government to resolve the contentious issues. Instead of vain criticism on the government, we should lend our complete moral support to it so that its resolve to sort out all issues through dialogue is strengthened. -MUHAMMAD SADIQUE, Lahore, via e-mail, December 22.
