A system of oppression

It has been more than 60 years since Pakistan came into being but even today, 49% of our citizens are forced to live below the poverty line. Poverty is increasing day by day. The situation has reached such an alarming stage that now families are committing collective suicides. Poor and indigent people are selling their children or handing them over to Edhi Centres. Poor people are selling their kidneys in order to clear their debts. It is estimated that 70 percent of our people are deprived of the basics; roti, employment, clean water, electricity, education and health. People needlessly fight about the Objectives Resolution or the 1973 constitution. Neither is enforced here; we only have a 'system of oppression'. All institutions have been disintegrated everything rotten to the core. The provinces have been deprived of their independence on account of centralization of powers. Pakistan is a hornet's nest of international conspiracies and is regarded as the most dangerous country in the world at present. Our enemies keep calling us a failed state. Crony capitalism, admixed with feudalism is the root cause of all our political, financial and social problems. This system is based on tyranny, injustice and corruption. In this system, a just distribution of resources is impossible. -S.A. KHOKHAR, Lahore, via e-mail, May 25.
