Most of tanneries discharge effluent into Nullah Aik which passes through the city and adjoining areas while tanneries located outside the municipal limits are discharging waste into Nullah Palkhu, turning the pure water of these seasonal nullahs contaminated and toxic which is used by the villagers for washing, irrigation purposes and meeting other needs of daily life.
PML-N Chief Organizer (Europe) Shamrooz Elahi Ghumman stated this while talking to inhabitants in his native village Jaitheki here the other day.
He regretted that another alarming development was that the sub-soil water of Sambrial and Sialkot tehsils was rapidly becoming unfit for human consumption as well as irrigation purposes, leading to a gradual fall in agricultural production.
It is to be noted that during monsoon season, effluent of these tanneries flooded vast tracts of agricultural land and damage standing crops. The disposal of untreated wastewater into seasonal nullahs, sewerage system, water courses and agricultural land has destroyed the environment in more than one, he pointed out, adding that he would utilise all his energies to ensure potable drinking water to the inhabitants of village Jaitheke and Sambrial. He informed that he had approached Federal Minister for Climate Change and Environment Mushahid Ullah Khan about the problem and the minister would visit Sambrial and examine the situation first hand. Mr Ghumman pledged that he would not go abroad until the problem of contaminated water was resolved.
