Hoax callers hinder Rescue 15 working

SIALKOT - Rescue 15 has become victim to extreme negligence of the higher authorities concerned, as more than 90 percent of the received calls are from the districts other than Sialkot due to some longstanding telephone line problems. The prank callers badly disturb the performance of the Rescue 15 in Sialkot. Inspector Riaz Butt, In-charge Rescue 15 Sialkot told the newsmen here on Sunday that Rescue 15 Sialkot is the most usually called number in emergencies. It receives an average 25,000 calls daily. He said that there are eight telephone lines available in Rescue 15 Sialkot, out of which one line was lying non-functional for long. There is one inspector, one sub-inspector, two ASIs and 13 police constables are deputed there at Rescue 15 Sialkot. He said that no moment passes at the Rescue headquarters near district courts chowk, without the bells ringing for incoming calls. Unfortunately, more than 90 percent of the received calls are from other districts that Rescue 15 Sialkot cannot entertain. Duty-in-charge of the rescue said that Sialkot PTCL and other higher authorities concerned have not taken any meaningful step to stop such calls despite repeated application. The other problem is that the callers misbehave and keep talking meaninglessly. 'I have requested to the higher authorities and PTCL that calls from other districts should be blocked, he added. He said that there are only eight telephones in Rescue 15 Sialkot headquarters for more than 3.5 million people mostly remain engaged even when there is no call or they receive but do not sound any bell at all because of telecommunication system or line faults. Besides this, prank-callers including girls and boys misuse free calls and keep asking irrelevant questions. They keep the line busy when there may be someone other in emergency and needs immediate help. There is no system in place to identify such callers and take them to task, he added. PTCL higher authorities at Sialkot and Gujranwala, on condition of anonymity, did acknowledge the problem of out of district calls being faced by Rescue 15 Sialkot and assured immediate remedial measures. They, however, said that they could do nothing about the calls being made through mobile phones, as only Pakistan Telecommunication Authority is the most concerned department to block such calls.
