65 die as rains ravage north

PESHAWAR - Heavy rain and flash flood wreaked havoc in northern parts of the country claiming lives of 65 people and injuring more than 100 others.

Parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) were worst hit, while a number of lives were lost in land sliding in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) on Sunday. Reports of damage were also received from Federally Administered Tribal Areas (Fata).

Heavy rain and hailstorm also lashed Loralai city and its outskirts in the south-western Balochistan, but no report of damage was received from any other area of this province.

Hundreds of houses, shops, commercial buildings were damaged due to torrential rains and flooded rivers and streams in the affected areas.

The torrential rain and floodwater caused serious losses to orchards and other standing crops. Bridges were swept away, and power supply and road infrastructure damaged.

KP government spokesman Mushtaq Ahmad Ghani confirmed 48 casualties in the province and said most of the damage was caused by landslides and roof collapses.

Kohistan and Shangla districts of KP were the worst hit. At least 17 persons were killed and 18 others injured in different incidents of land sliding, roof collapse and thundering in Shangla. Road and shops were washed away near Khan Khar area and people rushed to safer places to avoid more casualties.

An avalanche hit a house in Lewnai area of Shangla, killing three persons and injuring six others. In Shahpur area, a person was killed as a result of lightning.

In Ranial area, five persons of a family were killed when an avalanche raided their house. The injured were retrieved by the locals and shifted to district headquarter hospital.

In Kohistan, 12 deaths were reported, according to Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA). Owing to landslides, Kurakuram Highway remained closed in Kohistan.

At least 13 people died and more than two dozen other wounded in Malakand, Mansehra, Upper Dir, Charsadda and Chitral.

The PDMA said it has dispatched relief goods, including two 200 tents each to Swat, Shangla, Upper Dir, Lower Dir, and Kohistan districts.

One person got killed and another injured in district Malakand while two women were washed away by floodwater in Kabal tehsil of Swat. In Shabqadar tehsil of Charsadda, a nine year old was killed and his mother and a sibling sustained injuries in a house collapse.

In Peshawar, capital of KP, heavy shower and flashflood swept away Batta Tal Bridge, disrupting the transportation system in the area. Dozens of shops and houses were inundated by rainwater on Kohat Road, Landi Arbab and Nothia areas.

Eight persons of a family were killed in Sharda town of AJK when their house collapsed in a landslide. In Gilgit Baltistan, 11 persons - including six women - were killed in three separate rain related incidents. They included four members of a family who were killed in Chilas area. The communication link too has been disconnected due to torrential rain in GB.

A woman was injured in a roof collapse in Mohamand Agency of Fata. Houses were also damaged in Safi, Khwezai, Ambar and Haleemzai others tehsils of the tribal region.
