RAWALPINDI - The Anti-Narcotics Force (ANF) and Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) have unveiled the novel technique of smuggling drugs abroad by seizing a huge quantity of heroin-filled onion besides arresting five carriers in Karachi, informed a spokesman of ANF Headquarters here on Wednesday.
“ANF Karachi assisted by Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) recovered 61.5 kg of fine quality heroin filled in onion for smuggling abroad and busted a 5-member gang,” he said adding that the value of seized drug is approximately Rs 43 million in the international market. According to him, the force stationed in Karachi received information from sources that a racket was busy for smuggling heroin abroad by using innovative concealment methods.  Initial ground-check revealed suspicious activities, however, to further authenticate the information, a discreet surveillance of ANF was imposed, he said. 
A surveillance team substantiated the information as well. However, planning and execution of raid remained a challenge, owing to the gravity of crime in inhabited area, the spokesman added. He said that finally ANF and Pakistan Rangers (Sindh) conducted a raid at House D-119, Musarat Colony, Mallir City, Karachi, and recovered 61.5 kg of fine quality heroin and arrested 5 persons involved in the crime.
Initial investigation revealed that heroin was tactfully concealed inside onions by making a hole in onions. Later, the heroin filled capsules were inserted and finally capped by onion. During interrogation, he said, the accused disclosed that onions were also useful in evading the smell of drugs by sniffing dogs. A case has been lodged against all the arrested persons at ANF Police Station and further investigations were under process.
