ISLAMABAD - Public Accounts Committee on Wednesday expressed serious concern over corruption in the Survey of Pakistan and said that enemies could take advantage of such a situation in the organisation.PAC Chairman Nadeem Afzal Gondal said that in the present circumstances it is possible for any enemy to gather important information from Survey of Pakistan to use it against the country’s interests.PAC ordered National Accountability Bureau to take action against the officials in the Survey of Pakistan who caused damage to the national kitty. It is pertinent to mention here that Survey of Pakistan comes under Ministry of Defence and it was reported in the committee that it had serious security lacking and most of the employees were corrupt. The PAC declared that the financial record system and administrative arrangements of various departments of Defence Ministry including Survey of Pakistan were inadequate and lacked security. The committee directed for a comprehensive report regarding the performance of the Survey of Pakistan.  It was told to the committee that Survey of Pakistan was supposed to deposit 30 per cent of its income generated through any private contract or project but its officials had not deposited a penny since four years that caused loss of around Rs 90 million to national kitty. The committee also criticised various paras, whence the auditing bodies were not provided with adequate data, and these were redirected towards departmental; accounts committee. The Ministry of Defence official also told the committee meeting that they were waiting for the reply of GHQ related to the billions of rupees corruption in NLC. They said that despite many reminders GHQ was reluctant to submit the reply on the matter.Responding to various queries of the committee, the officials of Defence Ministry stated that there were a total of 43 cantonments in country, while the committee also asked the defense ministry to prepare a report regarding various directives passed to it by PAC.During the meeting member Riaz Hussain Pirzada raised the issue of forcible occupation of people’s lands by Armed forces in Cholistan, making it difficult for farmers to work in their fields. Pirzada also said that he had even written to COAS regarding the issue, but had received no reply as yet. The additional secretary advised Riaz Hussain Pirzada to address such issues directly to Secretary Defence.Meanwhile the Survey of Pakistan informed the committee that it’s budget for the current fiscal year stands at Rs 900 million as compared to previous of Rs.600 million; major part of which goes to salaries.
